Marine Lithium Battery Safety and Installation

Plan a marine lithium installation around fault protection, mounting, charging control, documentation and Australian vessel requirements.

A safe lithium installation is a vessel electrical system, not a battery substitution. The bank, BMS, charging sources, over-current protection, isolation, cabling, monitoring, physical location and essential services all have to behave predictably together.

Start with the vessel's status

Establish whether the boat is private recreational or a domestic commercial vessel, what AC and shore-power work is involved, and which state or territory rules, survey requirements and insurer conditions apply. Do not turn a summary on this site into a compliance certificate.

Read the Australian standards and compliance guide first, then use the authority resources to confirm current source documents.

Build the protection chain

Work from available fault current and the connected loads. The design needs suitable conductors, fuses or breakers, isolation, protected terminals and equipment ratings for the voltage and current involved. A BMS is the final cell-protection layer; it is not a substitute for circuit protection or normal load control.

The fuses and breakers guide, cable sizing guide and busbar and distribution guide cover the individual parts.

Make the installation inspectable

Location and mounting must account for heat, water, salt, vibration, restraint, service access and the consequences of a fault. The completed system should have labelled isolation, recorded settings, as-built drawings, manuals and a vessel-specific emergency plan.

Use the installation checklist before work, the commissioning checklist before handover and the documentation guide before accepting the job.
